I created the Vessel within a Vessel tutorial a few years ago as a little tangent project for students in the Surface Design Online class at that time. It’s a fun and unique project, that covers several skills, and doesn’t take much space or materials to make! It takes a bit of thinking about to understand the inside/outside eventualities from layout to finished piece. Don’t think too hard about it and follow along with the instructions, and it’ll all become clear as you come to the end!
It was made as something extra and fun, in a very casual way, so the lighting is not perfect- but the video does take you through the whole process, step by step!
Have some fun with this vessel within a vessel!
Materials:
-Merino Wool ( 21-23 micron is ideal) or Finn: 30 grams ( 1.o ounce) each in two contrasting colours (60 grams/2 ounces total wool)
-Resist materials: laminate floor underlay is ideal for this: 66cm x 30.5 cm (26″ x 12″)
-Embellishment materials:
– Silk Habotai/Paj (4.5-5 momme) 60cm x 30cm ( 24” x 12”)
– or try silk or plant fibres: 30 grams (1 ounce)
– Balloon + Bull Clip
-Bubble Wrap- 2 pieces 80cm x 60cm ( 32″ x 24″) or Rubber grip mat + thin painters plastic: 80cm x 60cm ( 32″ x 24″)
-Warm water + soap
-Chopstick or knitting needle for shaping (optional)
