Ellen + Fiona

This is a most exciting collaboration!
Ellen Bakker and I have been working on this project for the last year and our plans have all come together into a wonderful workshop series plus exhibition.

Ellen Bakker: Experimental Silk Painting : March 9-10-11
In this silk painting workshop, you will explore your own creativity while discovering the unique potential and surprising possibilities of silk painting. Working with brushes, templates, stamps and other tools, you will experience the effects of working with transparent layers, letting ink flow and making it stop.  The fabrics created will be used to create garments with Fiona Duthie, over the next three days.
No experience is necessary for this workshop.

Fiona Duthie: Garment Construction: March 12-13-14
Working with your luscious silks from the first three days, we’ll now explore aesthetic composition and seamless garment design, encompassing colour, form and fit, custom resists plus resist additions, for additional shaping and best fit.  Each participant starts with their own body measurements to build a resist that is their exact body shape. We then add on mix and match resist additions to create any type of garment you wish.  We look at collars, sleeves, aline shaping, godets, box pleats, ruffles, gathers and much more.  This garment construction method ensures an excellent and personalized fit. Refine your felt making through special finishing techniques to achieve exacting end results.   Participants can make either a dress, vest, tunic, skirt or short jacket.
Basic experience in feltmaking is essential.

3 Day Workshops:

Fiona Duthie: Raised Surfaces in Felt: March 9-10-11
$475.00 CDN (+GST) Includes tea/coffee and a delicious lunch. There is a material fee of $60 CDN for this workshop.

Raised Surfaces works with great textural dimension through the construction of felt forms that rise up and over the surface of our felt. By repeating these forms, we establish a strong sense of movement, creating felt canopies of leaves or waves, a floating garden of felt or silk blossoms, or dancing, twisting bone-like structures. We’ll work with these raised elements plus paper in felt, adding unique sculptural and tactile qualities, which we can further enhance with striking line work in greys and blacks with sumi-e ink. We work with all of the techniques while creating small wall pieces.
Knowledge of basic feltmaking and a curiosity in exploring new materials is essential.

Ellen Bakker: Experimental Silk Painting : March 12-13-14

    Hi Fiona,
I live in Bellingham WA and I took the Surface design, and Felt Illuminated classes from you online. At the Felter’s Fling 2017 I told myself that I would jump at the next chance to take a class from you on Salt Spring Island. I see that the registration opens at 2 PDT, is it here on this website that we register?
Looking forward to meeting Ellen as I could not attend the Felt Feutre Canada last fall. Crossing my fingers………….JP MacConnell

    Hi Fiona,

I saw the Posting about these new classes for next year and am excited!
In looking at the Fibre + Paper + Ink online class I’m wondering how much overlap in the course materials there would be in the Raised Surfaces in Felt class.

Are you able to tell me what time registration will start on the 15th and how many participants you have room for?

    Thank you!

    • Fiona D July 9, 2019 at 4:43 pm

Thanks for your message, Kathleen! There is no overlap at all between the Fibre + Paper + Ink workshop and the Raised Surfaces Workshop.
Only that in the Raised Surfaces class we will do some felting with paper- but much less intensive study of that medium than in the other class. InRaised Surfaces our main focus is on textures that stand well above the surface, often on felted stems. There are 12 spaces in each class and registration will open at 2pm, PDT (Vancouver, BC time)

    Good morning Fiona,
I am really excited to register for the Holland 6 day workshop in 2020. I don’t want to miss out due to time differences between when you post and when I see it. I am in the United States in Maryland and in July we are on Eastern Daylight time.

i have a question, more than a comment: I took Fiona’s online course in surface design. It was fabulous!! You are the best, most responsive teacher ever. I always learn an enormous amount from Fiona — and her personal comments and critiques are always generous and valuable.
Now, what is the difference between that course and the raised surface course on Salt Spring Island?

    • Fiona D June 20, 2019 at 3:58 pm

Thank you so much for your comments, Charlotte! The raised textures really take things up and above the surface of the felt. I also think of it as canopy felting- like the treetops! Many of the techniques we will look at involve using short felt stems to lift the design elements up above the felt surface. Plus we also look at working with paper incorporated with the wool. We will cover about 6 different raised design elements, plus the paper felting. There is only one design element that overlaps with the Surface Design course and that is the raised prefelts. If you have any other questions, please do email me!

I’m so excited about these possibilities, Fiona!
