March 13-16: Fiona Duthie, Layers in Design- Fabric Painting and Design Study

Materials List

  • 2.0 metres (2.2 yards)  silk habotai/paj/ponge silk (4.5 -5 momme), 114cm wide, in main colour for project, or a combination of colours, that add up to this total yardage amount of silk. Fiona will send you some information on dyeing your own, if you want to try that out! 
  • 2.0 metres (2.2 yards) silk habotai/paj/ponge white (4.5-5 momme), 90-115cm wide.
  • 150 grams (5.5 ounces)  extra fine merino roving, 19 micron or less, in main colour for project
  • 100 grams (3.5 ounces) extra fine merino roving, 19 micron or less, in one additional colour that will compliment/contrast with your main project colour.
  • 50 grams (1.75 ounces) extra fine merino roving, 19 micron or less, in dark grey and in natural white (100 grams/3.5 ounces total).

 

Some materials will be provided by Fiona for use during the class, including sketchbook, pens, inks, paints, brushes, markers, fabric stretchers, steamer, soap, grip mat, thin plastic, pipe for rolling. The cost for the use of these materials is $35.00. 

 

Participants must also bring:

  • Please bring a few images- these can be on your phone, but printed out on ordinary printer paper would be ideal, if possible. These don’t have to be great photos. They only need to make you remember a place, people or events.  Any of the following: Two or three images of favourite places. An image of a special event. An image of anything that in some way inspires you- this could be anything at all- something from nature, an inspiring person, a building that you love the lines of.  Something that captured your attention for any reason. 
  • Apron or old shirt for painting, since we will be working with paints, dyes and inks. 
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors, very sharp (I’ll have some extras available in case you can’t bring your own)
  • Sewing Needles,  Sewing thread in main project colour   
  • Ball Brause, or other tool for wetting out wool    
  • Any hand felting tools you like to use, like a palm washboard, or tupperware lid
