I suggest having enough supplies to make two lights- one during class, and one later. The wool amount allows for making two lights, plus our small sample.
I am sending out kits to all students in Canada and the US. These kits include wire rings for two lights- one with feet, and one that can be made into a hanging light, 1 light cord set, and enough paper to make 2 lights.
For everyone else, unfortunately, shipping costs are prohibitive and I can’t send you the full kit. It would be about $80.00 in shipping alone! I am mailing out paper packages for you, with enough paper to make 2 lights. Information on where to purchase lighting hardware is listed below.
Everyone :
- 227 grams (8 ounces) natural white merino wool roving 19-21 micron count.
- Sewing needle and thread in white or ecru.
UK only: I suggest ordering the following:
- 15cm ringset with feet: https://www.dannells.com/15cm-lamp-making-ringset—circular-1865-p.asp
- 15cm ringset: https://www.dannells.com/15cm-lampshade-utility-ring-1951-p.asp
- 2 x cord sets: https://www.dannells.com/b22-lamp-holder-with-switched-cable-and-fitted-uk-plug-1705-p.asp
Cord sets are also available from Ikea. This one fits the wire rings above: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/strala-cord-set-white-20371467/
EU only: I suggest ordering the following:
- 2 x 15cm ringset: https://www.dannells.eu/15cm-circular-lampshade-ringset-287-p.asp
I’ll share some ideas on how to make a stand for these rings, to be used easily as table lamps.
Cord sets with EU plug fittings can be bought from Dannells UK, but I understand the customs fees can be prohibitive. Cord sets are also available from Ikea, across Europe. Look for the Strala cord set. You can use any cord set that has either a B22 socket or an E27 socket. You can also look at other large online retailers for the cord sets.
NZ and Australia:
Lighting Rings:
3 Chooks: you could get one of the 20cm ring sets with 5 cm feet. Then we would adjust the resist size for you. https://3chooks.com.au/collections/all-products/products/lampshade-frames?variant=29017757003
or you could get the plain ring set and use one of my suggestions for making a stand to make it into a table lamp. The 14cm ring is closest to the ones I am using for this class. We can adjust your resist size to accommodate this slighter smaller ring. https://3chooks.com.au/collections/all-products/products/lampshade-frames?variant=15642314145835
For either of these ring sets, you will need a cord set with an E27 socket.
Arbee Craft: Ring Set Circle, 8″/20cm. https://www.arbee.com.au/product/46914961-ring-set-circle-8in-2pc?categoryId=1184 This is a little larger than the size I am using for this class. We can adjust the resist size for you.
Cord sets are also available from Ikea, and they will ship them in Australia. Look for the Strala cord set. I will show you how to make an adaptor for using this smaller socket in the wire rings above. https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/strala-cord-set-white-90371440/
NZ:
The wire ring suppliers above ship to NZ from Australia.
The Warehouse sells lighting cord sets:

Lighting hardware is more expensive in Australia and New Zealand, and you may be better off buying a lamp, secondhand or new, and recovering the frame. Quite nice, inexpensive lights can be found at Ikea and Kmart in Australia, and the Warehouse in New Zealand. If you find a lampshade that is larger than 15cm in diameter, you may not have enough paper in your package to make 2 lights, but you’ll have plenty of paper to make 1 beautiful one and have some left over!
Do feel free to explore other online retailers for these supplies. You are looking for 15cm-20cm diameter wire rings and cord sets with either a B22 socket or an E27 socket.
Lighting hardware can be challenging as regulations and suppliers vary so much from country to country. I’ve listed the best sources I’ve been able to find here!
I’ll share hardware sources for those in Canada and the US during the workshop.
Tools and Hardware
- Resist material: 38cm x 51cm (15 x 20 inches) black painters plastic (3.5mil), or a plastic tablecloth from a dollar store in a colour. Using black or coloured resist material really helps to be able to see your wool layout, to help get the most even layout possible. The resist is not that big. You could also make one using duck tape over paper. This is still flexible and waterproof. (You will need a larger resist if you are using a different size of wire ring set)
- Bubblewrap 2 pieces, both 62cm x 90cm (24” x 36inches)
- Soap
- Ball brause or tool for wetting out felt
- PVC pipe, wooden dowel or foam pool noodle
- Measuring tape
- Old towel
- Iron
- Small pointed tip pliers like jewelry pliers are helpful for shaping.
- Any style of felting tool will be helpful for working over the surface textures
- Knitting needle or a clay sculpting tool-like a tiny spatula, or a small spoon- for shaping the paper reliefs
- Scissors- for cutting paper, and small, finely pointed scissors for cutting the finished felt.
