Raised Surfaces Online Workshop: Materials List
This class requires only very basic materials that are easy to source. Most of the elements are constructed from wool. In two of the elements, we use silk organza and ramie fibres.
This list will give you enough materials to make 8 small wall pieces, 1 each of the 8 techniques in natural colours, with coloured accents, or 1 each of the 8 techniques in colours, with white accents.
You can see in many of my pictures of the class samples, that some are in colours, with colour contrasts, and some are in almost all white with colour contrasts. This can give you an idea in which way you’d prefer to work. Use colours you love, whether those are all neutrals, brights, or maybe deep earthy tones. Any of these will look great!
As long as you have wool, you’ll be able to make some wonderfully dramatic dimensional pieces in this class!
Fibres and materials:
18 ounces/500 grams total merino wool roving, natural. This does not have to be an extra fine merino- you can work with any micron count from 19-24 (21-24 micron is actually better for our projects).

Small amounts of contrasting coloured merino wool for accents, about 3.5 ounces/100grams total amount, in 4-6 colours including black.
Prefelt: 8 x pieces (8″ x 12″/20 x 30cm) in 4-5 colours including black. (Optional- you can also make your own using some of the wool amounts above. Instructions included in the class.)
Silk Organza: 12″/30cm x 45″/115cm wide, 5 momme weight, in white or colours similar to your main colour selections.
*Ramie Fibre: 1 ounce/28 grams total- select colours based on your chosen colour palette. Hemp fibres are a good extra or alternative to ramie.
*pvc plumbing tubing: 24″ (60cm) x 1/8″/3mm inner diameter. This item can be found in most hardware stores/building supply stores, sold by the yard/metre. See Pictures Below. It must be this size!
*yarn needle with a large eye
* These three items are used for one of our techniques. If you find these hard to source, you can consider them optional. We have lots of other techniques to explore and you can catch up on this one whenever you can get the materials!
Optional:
Silk or Fabric paints in 2-3 colours. You could use three primary colours so you can mix any colour from these. I like to use Pebeo Setasilk or Jaquard DyeNaFlow, but there are many other fabric paint options out there. You can also use acrylic paints mixed with a textile medium.
These samples can be mounted on wooden frames. This allows them to be displayed like small artworks! Instructions are included in the class. If you wish to do this, you will need embroidery hoops or bamboo rings. 8″ (20cm) hoops will work well. You could also order these during or after the class after making the samples and knowing how many you will want to mount.
