Colour Studies for Feltmaking Online Workshop: Materials List
Fibres and materials:
You can make your own prefelts for use in this class-instructions are included in the first lessons. Or you can buy prefelts. If you choose to make your own prefelts, this is what you will need:
- 85 grams/3.0 ounces white wool roving or batting, any wool breed
- 60 grams/2.0 ounces, each of yellow, bright turquoise, and magenta (bright pink). Red can be substituted for the magenta. Merino wool roving.
- 30 grams/1.0 ounce, each of white and black. Merino wool roving. This white is in addition to the white listed above.
- 30 grams/1.0 ounce, each of a taupe/beige and a medium grey.
- 60 grams/2.0 ounces, each of 6 of the main colours you have in your wool stash. Ones you love to use, or choose 6 of your favourite colours. Aim for a range of warm and cool colours. I most want you to work primarily with colours you really love so you can take these colour ideas immediately into your work!
If you choose to buy prefelts for use in the class, this is what you will need:
- 85 grams/3.0 ounces white wool roving or batting, any wool breed
- one piece of prefelt- ideally 30cm (12”) square, but a slightly smaller size will be fine also. In the following colours: yellow, bright turquoise, and magenta (bright pink) or red, white, black, taupe/beige, grey, plus any 6 colours that you love to work with.
- 45 grams/1.5 ounces, each of yellow, bright turquoise, and magenta (bright pink). Red can be substituted for the magenta. Merino wool roving.
- 15 grams/0.5 ounce, each of white and black. Merino wool roving. This white is in addition to the white listed above.
- 15 grams/0.5 ounce, each of a taupe/beige and a medium grey.
- 45 grams/1.5 ounces, each of 6 of the main colours you have in your wool stash. Ones you love to use, or choose 6 of your favourite colours. Aim for a range of warm and cool colours. I most want you to work primarily with colours you really love so you can take these colour ideas immediately into your work!
Whether making or buying prefelts, you will also need:
- 0.30 metre/yard silk habotai/paj/ponge 4-5momme weight, 115cm (45”)-150cm (60”) wide, in three colours- one length each of three of your favourite colours. These do not have to match your selected wool colours, and should be a mixture of warm and cool colours. This can also be silk margilan in the heavier weight of margilan.
- 0.3 metre/yard silk gauze/chiffon/tissue silk 2.5-3.5 momme weight, 115cm (45”)-150cm (60”) in white and black

Tools and Hardware
- 2 pieces of bubblewrap about 36 inches(90cm) x 48 inches (122cm) or one piece rubber grip mat plus 2 pieces thin painters plastic all 90cm (36”) x 122cm (48”)
- Handcarders, if you have them, or a wire pet brush (like a mini carder) Don’t buy hand carders especially for this class. A wire cat or dog brush will work well.
- Soap
- Ball brause or tool for wetting out felt
- PVC pipe, wooden dowel or foam pool noodle
- Measuring tape
Optional but very handy: Small scale for weighing out wool. Look for one like THIS.
