Fibre + Paper begins on October 9, 2020. The online classroom opens on October 2nd, for introduction and materials discussion.
This class is now FULL! I will offer this class again in 2021.
Workshop Fee: $130.00 USD. This includes the papers required for the class and shipping.
Paper felted in combination with wool has the most wonderful hand- it has the body and stiffness of paper and the soft, tactile qualities of wool. Much of my work over the last 5 years has been based in exploring this amazing combination of materials.
Paper felted with wool fibres creates a wonderful new surface and structure in the felt. This is a beautiful and unusual combination of materials that combines traditional Korean Joomchi papermaking techniques, with traditional felting. The new, integrated surfaces are full of texture and have a sculptural quality and hand in the textile.
The resulting felt has a firmness, excellent for use in wall pieces, felt lighting, vessels and sculptures. The paper dries to be stiff, but also softened by its new relationship with the wool. Working with paper in our felt projects opens up a huge world of material possibilities. Any art materials traditionally used on paper, can now also be added to felt work, including inks, paints, pastels and pencils. I will often work with multiple layers of paper in my felt pieces, building up a paper relief effect on the surface.
This is an intermediate level class-for those with some feltmaking experience. If you are a beginning feltmaker, work through my Introduction to Flat Feltmaking tutorial to become familiar with the materials and the techniques.
The class is three weeks long and is delivered in one module.
We’ll look at paper exploration, best papers for feltmaking and sources, creating relief surfaces with paper, coloured papers, mark making tools for use with paper + wool. We’ll comprehensively explore paper felting, both flat and dimensions using resists, while making a series of samples and vessels.
The lessons will all be presented at one time, through PDF’s and videos, but there will be a suggested schedule on how to progress through the lessons. You will need about 4-6 hours each week for design and feltmaking. I answer questions and give comments throughout the 3 weeks of the course in the online classroom, allowing all participating students to learn through one another’s projects.
Please do email Fiona if you have any questions about the class.
