Mark making and printing on textiles is an excellent way to personalize your work. Any style can be used, from abstract bold lines, to drawings, to text. Inks and paints are wonderful and bold when used on feltwork. I have been working with ink on cloth for over 8 years now, and just about every piece I have made over that time has some mark of ink!
This is an intermediate level class-for those with some feltmaking experience. If you are a beginning feltmaker, work through my Introduction to Flat Feltmaking tutorial to become familiar with the materials and the techniques.
The class is three weeks long.
We’ll explore fibres, best inks and paints to use on textiles, including natural fibres like cotton, silk and nuno felts. Different applications of ink on cloth, fixing of ink, treatment and care of ink marked textiles. In these weeks, we make a series of nuno felt samples, adding variations on working with ink to each one, including ink as a dye, ink at the prefelt stage, diluted ink, and full strength ink. We also explore colour and ink alternatives in the form of paints and markers.
The lessons will all be presented through PDF’s and videos, with a suggested schedule on how to progress through the lessons. You will need about 4-6 hours each week for design and feltmaking. I answer questions and give comments throughout the 3 weeks of the course in the online classroom, allowing all participating students to learn through one another’s projects.
